Magical power surrounds us. It may be found in everything from rocks and metal to wood, rainwater and a gentle breeze. Plus ourselves, of course.
We call this energy the fifth element, essence or, put most simply, Spirit. The Spirit is all-powerful. It is the basis of life itself. It makes the planets spin, the tide come in, the sunrise and the seasons come around again. It also affects our moods and interactions - both with the world around us and between people.
If we can harness this power and channel it, we can use it to achieve great things. So how do we do this? To begin with we have to open our hearts and minds and acknowledge the Spirit. We do this by focusing our attention on tangible objects known to contain the Spirit, such as candle flames, pebbles and flowers.
Other useful tools include colored ribbons, crystals, rainwater and personal items such as hair or nail clippings. All pretty basic stuff, away from the context of witchcraft. But in the right setting - a spell - they act as a catalyst, allowing us to channel specific aspects of the Spirit.
This is achieved through the help from the God and Goddess. We are all familiar, I’m sure, with the concept of God. In witchcraft we have two Gods, one male, the other female. Hence God and Goddess. Which is how it should be. God and Goddess are not imbued with human qualities like the deities of Greek mythology, although we do sometimes call upon them, speak to them, as though they were almost human. This is more for our benefit, to help us express our needs
The best way to envisage God and Goddess is as two unique energy sources. To aid visualization we think of God as represented by the Sun and Goddess as symbolized by the moon. God and Goddess aren’t actually the sun and the moon, of course. But the sun and moon are part of them. Understand this concept and you are well on your way to becoming a witch.
You also need to know about the four elements: fire, earth, water and air. Fire and earth are associated with the sun. Water and air are connected with the moon. Everything living depends on the elements. Without them, nothing could survive. In fact, the world would not exist, since the elements make up the very fabric of our entire existence. The elements are the world.
Meditate a moment on the significance of the four elements - how they work together, their potential use to us - and you begin to understand their importance. And why, therefore, witches hold them in such high esteem.
Witches realize that objects such as candles, stones, flowers and rain not only represent the elements, they are of the elements. And each element contains the Spirit, which is part of the whole Spirit. Thus when casting a spell, assuming it is a cast well - which requires thought, respect and a cast-iron belief in our abilities - witches have the entire energy of the universe at their disposal. And nothing on earth comes more powerful then that.
Uphold the Witch’s law we must,
In purest love and earnest trust.
Please think before a spell’s begun:
"If I harm no one, then no harm is done.
For what I do comes back to me,
Multiplied by the power of three."
If followed with your mind and heart,
We’ll merry meet and merry part.
If followed with your mind and heart
