Casting a circle before a spell is an important ritual. This mental and physical preparation helps you to be focused and will have a positive effect on your magic.
To this end, before casting, make sure you are unlikely to be disturbed and if necessary give the room a quick tidy, to minimize chaotic influences.
Next lay out the tools and ingredients needed on the altar. This should lie from east to west, allowing you to face north. Directions may be determined with a compass.
Hold your wand out from your body, pointing northwards. Visualize a white light emanating from your wand and walk slowly in clockwise direction.
As you walk say:
"This circle is a positive field, a protective shield."
Walk the circle a second time, saying:
"This circle keeps me safe within, no harm can enter in."
Walk the circle a third time, saying:
"This circle will enhance my spell ensuring that I cast it well."
Facing north, trace a pentacle in the air with your wand. Do the same to the east, south and west.
To open a circle at the end of the spell, point your wand northward and walk the circle in an anti-clockwise direction, saying:
"I do not break this circle but the circle is undone.
The spell that I have cast it has begun.
Mindful of the witch’s rede
Now the magic has been freed
I will harm none.
Yet if harm’s done
It shall return by the power of three."
Note that witches working in the southern hemisphere prefer to cast their circle in an anti-clockwise direction and open it clockwise
