Labadie Mansion - a 19th Century Victorian mansion, in the woods, far far outside of town, perched atop of a huge hill over looking the country side for miles. This house was the scene of 4 deaths in the early 20th century. Since then the house has burned 2 times, now only the rock walls and foundation remain to stand watch over the miles of lonely woods. If you make it through the mile of lush vegetation, to the top of the hill, you will generally be treated by your flashlights not working, strange, invisible people shouting your name, odd smells, strange animals running through the dark, only a few meters in front of you. But probably the most scary part of the whole ordeal, is when what's left of the fireplace starts to blaze on it's own as you leave.
I have been to this place it is about 10 miles out of town. The last time I was there we were walking up the hill and I kept having the feeling someone was watching me. When we got to the top we started looking around the ruins and I glanced out in the woods and I saw some very eerie eyes. One of the girls that was with us started to really freak out so we decided to leave, when we were leaving I smelt a god awefull smell like burned flesh or something. Well we made it out of there in record time I think.

IMO, the Labadie Mansion legend is as creepy as it is tragic and fascinating. I live in southwest Missouri and get to the Bartlesville-area on business occasionally. I'm now flirting with the idea of visiting the Labadie Mansion site with my ghost-hunting partner (who happens to be my brother.) If/when we get there, we'll be visiting during the day because, even though many folks find it more exciting to ghost-hunt at night, my experience living in rural America is that wandering around unknown territories in the blackness of night is a good way to get injured, lost or shot (or any combination of the above. *grin*) I wanted to learn more about the Labadie family and this legend (which initially brought me to Spirit Chat)...here's some of the better stuff I found on the Internet: - A brief account of the events that are purported to have led to the haunting of this site: www.angelfire.com/scary/labadie0- Genealogical information on Frank Labadie, Jr. and Samantha Miller: jeanchiquot.cicotte.us/1058.html. - Information on the Labadie Cemetery at this site: www.rmoberly.net/Labadie.asp. One item of interest is that Enos Parsons is "believed to be buried there", but it is not confirmed (which feeds the aforementioned "haunting from the creek" theory. *grin*) Also, the page mislabels the headstone of the infant son of Frank Sr. and Susan Labadie is the son of Frank Jr. and Samantha Labadie. (Susan Labadie was Frank Jr.'s mother.) There is no burial reference to the infant son born to Samantha Labadie that was fathered by Enos Parsons. This also feeds directly into the legend that the child haunts the woods surrounding the mansion. That page indicates you can find the cemetery as follows: "Located in Section 9, Township 28 N, Range 12 E, in Osage County. It is just South of Highway 10, Southeast of Hulah Lake. Turn South at the Cross Bell Ranch Sign and watch closely for the fence on the East side of the road." That location is just outside Copan, OK, which fits with most accounts putting the Labadie Mansion about 10 miles from Bartlesville (based on my calculations, that general area is about 10 miles West-North-West "As The Crow Flies" from Copan and about 13 miles North-North-West A.T.C.F from Bartlesville.) If someone from the Copan/Bartlesville area who has visited the mansion(or at least been near it) can give better ranging and directions, please post the info, as these are just my guesstimates. I suspect that the Labadie Cemetery must be close to the mansion ruins, but I can't find any hard evidence to confirm/deny that suspicions. Amulet, do you know if the ruins of the mansion are near the cemetery? Finally, being at my computer all the time for work leaves me a lot of little breaks to do research on interesting topics such as this, but it doesn't leave much time to actually do the field work. I have no idea if this area is dangerous (whether from the living or the dead), so if you use the information above to actually visit this site, please let someone know where you're going, how long you expect to be there and when you're expecting to return. Give them specific instructions to call the authorities about your absence should you not show up when and where you said you would. Even if Frank Labadie, Jr. doesn't break his spectral leg off in your ass, you might injure yourself for completely natural reasons and I'm sure you don't want to spend the night in those woods with a busted ankle and no way out. I'd hate for my research above to enable someone to do something ill-advised and get hurt as a result. Have fun, but be careful out there. OK, I'm all done preaching now. (Thanks.)

I couldn't sleep again, so I figured I'd try to locate the Labadie Cemetery using USGS topographic maps of the area. Based upon directions from www.rmoberly.net/Labadie.asp and using some additional information from pages about E.C. Mullendore's murder (the Mullendores own the Cross Bell Ranch, the roadsign for which is mentioned on the Labadie Cemetry page reference above), I'm pretty sure these are the correct directions to the Labadie Cemetery (and nearby Mansion), as the USGS map indicates a cemetery in the location described by the aforementioned URL and it is at the base of a large, wooded hill which overlooks the area surrounding it. I have the directions leaving from the Bartlesville Municipal Airport just to give everyone an easy-to-find landmark to start their trip. Here are the directions: Time Mile Instruction For 11:26 PM 0.0 Depart Bartlesville Municipal Airport on Local road(s) (West) 120 yds 11:26 PM 0.1 Turn LEFT (South) onto CR-3007 0.7 mi 11:28 PM 0.8 Turn LEFT (East) onto US-60 [W HWY-60] 4.3 mi 11:32 PM 5.0 Turn LEFT (North) onto US-75 [SE Washington Blvd] 8.3 mi 11:40 PM 13.3 Bear LEFT (North-West) onto N3970 Rd 1.2 mi 11:43 PM 14.5 Turn LEFT (West) onto SR-10 2.4 mi 11:47 PM 17.0 Bear LEFT (West) onto W 900 Rd 0.7 mi 11:49 PM 17.6 Road name changes to Local road(s) 0.2 mi 11:50 PM 17.8 Road name changes to E0090 Rd 2.0 mi 11:53 PM 19.8 Bear RIGHT (North-West) onto CR-3011 2.3 mi 11:57 PM 22.1 Turn RIGHT (East) onto Local road(s) 65 yds 11:57 PM 22.1 At Labadie Cemetery, return West on Local road(s) 65 yds 11:58 PM 22.2 Turn LEFT (South) onto CR-3011 0.6 mi 11:59 PM 22.8 Turn RIGHT (West) onto Local road(s) 0.3 mi 12:00 AM 23.0 Arrive Labadie Mansion SUMMARY Driving distance: 23.0 miles Driving time: 34 minutes FYI, wherever the directions say 'Local Roads' above, it typically means you'll find a crude path or other road that is undocumented on USGS maps. I'm sure these will be the type of roads that lead to the overgrown Labadie Cemetery and Labadie Mansion sites. I'm not planning any trips to Bartlesville in the immediate future, so I won't be able to verify these directions until my business takes me there again. However, if I wasn't pretty sure these directions are very close (if not exact), I wouldn't post them. If someone has actually been to the LM site and can verify my directions, please post a reply with any comments or corrections. Thanks!

FWIW, I'm having a friend of mine who lives near Bartlesville access the newspaper microfilms at the Bartlesville library to see what additional information we can find out about Frank and Samantha Labadie (not to mention Enos Parsons.) Of course, I'll post any good stuff I find here, but I'm eventually planning on putting up my own free site to host my findings on the Labadie Mansion and some other four-states haunts I'm currently researching.
That aside, I realized that my previous directions to the Labadie Cemetery/Mansion used a lot of backroads to get to the mansion site, which is not really necessary. Below is another set of directions that sticks more to the major roads in the area and really isn't any longer that taking the backroads. Here's the directions I'm planning on following to the site on my next jaunt to Bartlesville:
Time Mile Instruction For Toward
11:26 PM 0.0 Depart Bartlesville Municipal Airport on Local road(s) (West) 120 yds 11:26 PM 0.1 Turn LEFT (South) onto CR-3007 0.7 mi 11:28 PM 0.8 Turn LEFT (East) onto US-60 [W HWY-60] 4.3 mi 11:32 PM 5.0 Turn LEFT (North) onto US-75 [SE Washington Blvd] 8.3 mi 11:40 PM 13.3 Bear LEFT (North-West) onto N3970 Rd 1.2 mi 11:43 PM 14.5 Turn LEFT (West) onto SR-10 8.4 mi 11:56 PM 22.9 Turn LEFT (South) onto CR-3011 0.9 mi 11:58 PM 23.8 Turn LEFT (East) onto Local road(s) 65 yds 11:58 PM 23.8 At Labadie Cemetery, return West on Local road(s) 65 yds 11:58 PM 23.8 Turn LEFT (South) onto CR-3011 0.6 mi 11:59 PM 24.4 Turn RIGHT (West) onto Local road(s) 0.3 mi 12:00 AM 24.7 Arrive Labadie Mansion
SUMMARY Driving distance: 24.7 miles Driving time: 34 minutes

I live in Bartlesville and can attest to the haunted Lababie House in Copan Ok. Me and three friends went up there and there was some feed and some hay in the horse barn feeder and of course no horses have been there for a long time. On our way back down the hill to our car there is a wooded area to your left and there was most definitely something watching us in the woods. I was completely petrified! We could hear it stalking us just inside the woods and when we would stop walking it would stop walking and when we started walking it would start walking and when we started RUNNING it started running right alongside of us hidden from view in the wood line. I go ghost hunting alot around here and let me tell you that was the most horrific feeling of dread I have ever had! I have also seen an albino deer up there that I believe is a ghost. Some people claim to have seen a cat-man of sorts. A real scary place for sure.
